John Stark Regional High School Recognized as a Granite State School of Excellence by Special Olympics New Hampshire
At John Stark Regional High School, the spirit of unity, inclusion, and community pride isn’t just part of the culture—it’s the foundation of who they are. This was never more evident than on September 20th, when the school was honored as a Granite State School of Excellence by Special Olympics New Hampshire (SONH) at their annual Homecoming Pep Rally. This recognition reflects the dedication and heart the school community pours into creating a welcoming, inclusive environment that brings together students of all abilities.
The Unified Champion School Program: Building a Legacy of Inclusion
John Stark Regional High School’s journey toward this award began with their commitment to the Unified Champion School Program, an initiative started by Special Olympics New Hampshire in 2020 to recognize schools that excel in promoting Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement. To achieve this honor, a school must meet ten standards of excellence and have a sustainable plan for supporting Unified programming.
Through their diverse offerings and community-driven approach, John Stark has far exceeded these requirements. They are setting a powerful example in New Hampshire for what true inclusion looks like.
A Season of Sports and Celebration
Unified Sports at John Stark are more than just athletic events; they’re celebrations of teamwork and friendship. Their Unified basketball and track teams, each with a strong roster of athletes and Unified Partners, practice together weekly. Games, typically held on Mondays and Wednesdays, allow athletes and their partners to compete with other schools, showcasing their hard work and skills. Unified athletes participate in pep rallies, celebrate season awards, and are an essential part of their school’s athletic spirit.
Beyond the court and the track, John Stark promotes camaraderie and belonging through inclusive team-building events throughout each sports season. From the fall pep rally to their spring Unified basketball game, each season is a chance for athletes and their partners to connect, grow, and celebrate their achievements together.
Unified Fitness and Physical Education: Every Body Moves
John Stark also offers an adaptive physical education program where students of all abilities meet weekly to explore new skills and activities. Each session is designed to be interactive and fun, with activities like parachute games and fundamental sports skills, creating an inclusive environment for students to thrive. This is another way John Stark fosters an environment where all students can participate, contribute, and experience success.
Youth Leadership: Students Leading the Way
At John Stark, student-driven clubs and initiatives are the heart of the community’s spirit. Inclusive Youth Leadership opportunities abound, empowering students to set goals, design projects, and drive change. Clubs meet regularly, and their impact is evident in events like the annual Diversity Week and the Special Olympics New Hampshire Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Last winter, a senior student led a “Shoot for Inclusion” basketball jamboree as part of their senior project. Events like this highlight the powerful role that youth leadership plays in fostering understanding, breaking down barriers, and cultivating friendships.
Schoolwide Events: Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion Together
In addition to their ongoing programs, John Stark hosts three significant schoolwide events each year that promote inclusion and educate the community about intellectual disabilities:
- Challenge Day – Being the Change: An all-day event that brings students and staff together to discuss and reflect on acceptance, empathy, and community.
- Diversity Week: A celebration of the unique voices and backgrounds that make up our school, with activities and conversations that promote inclusion and awareness.
- Shoot for Inclusion Basketball Jamboree: An annual event that invites local teams to participate, celebrating the unity and friendships fostered through Unified Sports.
These events have become cornerstones of the school culture, contributing positively to their school climate and leaving a lasting impact on students, staff, and their community.
Sustaining a Culture of Excellence and Inclusion
John Stark’s mission to foster an inclusive, supportive school environment isn’t something they approach lightly. It’s a commitment shared by students, staff, and community members alike. With the ongoing passion of their students and the unwavering support of faculty, John Stark has developed a roadmap to continue these programs without financial dependency, ensuring they remain a core part of who they are.
When you step into John Stark Regional High School, you’re greeted by a culture that values each individual, where kindness and support are woven into the fabric of the community. Earning the title of Granite State School of Excellence is a reminder of their dedication to making John Stark a place where every student feels valued and included.
